The tree’s growth rings are a record, and this record carries a range of emotions.
Ultimately, the artist seeks to visualize this record to express love and to draw out each individual’s emotional sensibility.
Functionality - 옻칠열경화기법(Lacquer heat curing technique)
나는 절대적 필요성에 의해서 손목을 다친 아내를 위한 가볍고 사용하기 편한 나무그릇을 만들기 시작하였다.
옻(漆,lacquer)은 7천년전부터 사용해온 우리의 유산이다.
도자기는 담는다는 것에 스트레스가 없다.
나무처럼 썩지 않아 세척이 편하다.
옻칠은 햇빛에 분해까지 된다.
햇빛 아래 3개월이면 완전히 분해되어 사라진다.
고온의 무유와 유약은 도자기를 화석화시켜 깨지지 않으면 사용이 영원하다.
그러나 나무는 세척과 생활마찰에 의해 잘 벗겨져 사용이 한정적이다.
도자기는 음식을 담아도 도자기 자체에서 나는 냄새가 없어 음식맛이 제대로다.
나무는 기본적으로 나무냄새가 나며 유칠을하면 기름냄새가 나며 옻칠을 하면 옻냄새가 난다.
도자기는 백자, 청자 , 분청, 옹기 다양한 색과 질감이 있다. 나무는 다양한 수종의 나무가 있지만 마감을 하면 모두 비슷하다.
나는 자라 오면서 주위에서 나무그릇을 식기로 사용하는 사람을 본적이 없다.
나무그릇을 식기로 사용하는 나라는 현재 전 세계에서 일본이 유일하다.
그런데 나는 나무로 그릇을 만든다 .
그것은 절대적 필요성 때문이다.
나의 이 옻칠나무그릇에는 뜨거운 음료을 담을수 있고 옻칠백화현상도 옻냄새도 없다.
이 기능성은 최초이며 유일하다.
I started making lightweight and easy-to-use wooden tableware for my wife who had injured her wrist out of absolute necessity.
Lacquer is a part of our heritage, used for over 7,000 years.
Ceramics carry no stress when used as vessels.
Unlike wood, they do not decay, making them easy to clean.
Lacquerware, moreover, even decomposes under sunlight. Within three months under the sun, it can completely break down and disappear.
High-fired, glaze-fused ceramics are fossilized, and unless broken, they can last forever.
Wood, however, wears easily through washing and the frictions of daily use, limiting its durability.
Ceramics impart no smell of their own, allowing the true taste of food to shine.
Wood, by nature, carries its own scent; when oiled, it smells of oil, and when lacquered, it smells of lacquer.
Ceramics come in a wide variety—white porcelain, celadon, buncheong, earthenware—each with distinct colors and textures.
Wood, though drawn from many species, tends to look alike once finished.
Growing up, I never saw anyone around me use wooden bowls as tableware.
Today, Japan is the only country in the world where wooden vessels are still used for dining.
And yet, I make bowls out of wood.
It is out of absolute necessity.
My lacquered wooden bowl can hold hot beverages without causing any whitening effect or emitting any lacquer odor.
This functionality is a first and unique.

1. FOR 함지(HamJi)
함지는 오랜전통을 가진 한국에서 다용도로 사용하던 큰사이즈의 나무그릇이다 . 나무가 가진 자유곡선을 표현하여 형태적으로 자연의 모습을 최대한 담으려했다. 그것은 자연의 곡선이 주는 시각적 감성을 전달하기 위해서 이다. Hamji is a large-sized wooden bowl that has been used for many purposes in Korea, which has a long tradition. 돌,흙,모래,금속등 지구물질로 시작된 마티에르의 표현은 산소라는 지구물질을 만나서 색감을 만들어 냈다. 3. 지구 물질
작업의 결과물을 자연환경(비,바람,계절의변화,햇빛…)에 놓고 1년을 지켜보면 변화의 과정을 실험하였다. The language of the Earth What is the difference between life being born and dying in the same natural environment (rain, wind, seasonal changes, sunlight, etc.)? Isn't the Earth talking about life and death in its own language in the same natural environment? As I felt different emotions, feelings, and sensibility from the various winds that blew throughout the year, I came to think that the language of the Earth is something like emotion, feeling, and sensibility.
